Why is free software different with freeware? To help distinguish between free software and freeware, Richard Stallman, founder of Free Software Movement, explained: “Free software is a matter of liberty, not price. To understand the concept, you should think of free as in free speech, not as in free beer.” [source]

According to Richard Stallman and the Free Software Foundation, a software is free software if users who receive a copy of the software have these four freedoms:

Freedom #0: The freedom to run the program, for any purpose.
Freedom #1: The freedom to study how the program works, and adapt it to your needs.
Freedom #2: The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help your neighbor.
Freedom #3: The freedom to improve the program, and release your improvements (and modified versions in general) to the public, so that the whole community benefits.

Freedom 1 and 3 require access to source code, because it is not possible to learn and change the software without the source code. Other groups have published definitions that describe a similar case about free software. Debian Free Software Guidelines (DFSG) and the Open Source Definition is an example.

Some users use the term “libre” to avoid the disambiguation of the word free. The term is mostly found in the free software movement.Other term used is “open source software” that are listed in the Free Software Guidelines Debian made in 1998.
