Jawed Karim and YouTube
Don’t underestimate an idea and creativity. The idea and creativity of three young boys who created YouTube made them suddenly become young billionaire. Jawed Karim (28), Chad Hurley (29), and Steve Chen (28) currently smeared money as big as 1,65 billion US dollar.
The world giant search engine, Google, bought their site, made three boys to be the United States most young trillion and richest, results of their efforts. On Thursday (8/2) San Fransisco times, Google hand over 700 million US dollar as first payment.
Jawed, who went out from YouTube before being bought by Google on 9 October last year, got 64,6 million US dollar. Jawed leave YouTube because he want to go to school again. The three young boy received money as the founder of YouTube, a video-sharing site.
Jawed, who are muslim, love about computers since kid. His father, Naimul Karim, is a researcher of nationality Bangladesh. His mother, Ms. Christine Karim, also a researcher and became professor’s assistant of biochemistry in University of Minnesota, AS. Since a boy, Jawed known as a boy who play on a computer programming.
Jawed was born on 1979 in Merseburg, East Germany. He then moved to West Germany during 1982. At that time Germany was still divided two by Berlin wall which is destroyed in 1989. The Karim family then moved to USA during 1992. He completed his SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL in Central High School, Saint Paul, Minnesota, and then lectured in University of Illinois. He deliberate chose to go to University of Illinois because there are the founder of Netscape, Marc Andreessen. “I do not want to be Marc Andreessen follower, but it’s really cool to be in the same place,” said Jawed. However, he then stopped going to class when he decide to work on PayPal. He completed his lecture by means of unique, took the lecture online in Saint Clara University.
When work on PayPal, he met two new friends, Chad Hurley and Steve Chen — for fun they made a website on February 15 2005 and was launched officially on April 23 2005. The name of their site was somewhat unique, YouTube. The basic concept of their site is simple, a video sharing. Afterward they usually spent their time till late night to discuss about their site and internet. Sometimes they discuss in Hurley house or Jawed apartment. Jawed who advice the idea of Internet video-sharing. However, he explained that the contribution of his two friends to complete all of his idea is the most important factor that make YouTube became success. During the first time operates, they agreed that they not as the YouTube worker and therefore they refused to be employed. “We chose to become informal advisor,” said Jawed.
Their site received very high responses from user all over the world. Only a year after that, Jawed immediately became a Billionaire. He received 137,443 shares with the total value of 326 million US dollar. Several days before become billionaire, Jawed then decide to leave YouTube. The reason is, he want to continue his Master’s program in University of Illinois. The uniqueness, before became a student, he often came into the conference forum on his campus to give a lecture. Jawed gave the lecture titled “YouTube: From Concept to Hyper- growth” in front of hundreds of students. However, in several opportunities, Jawed stated his discomfort to became the person who had excessive money. His two parents, said, so in fact the Jawed reason went out from YouTube. When going around and making a speech at University Illinois, Jawed depicted himself as a person who still need to learn and study.
“I’m same as the other student,” he said concerning attention of people who changed after became a billionaire. He appeared like before he leaving his campus, uses jin’s, polo clothes, a brown jacket, and Puma’s black shawl. His mother know about Jawed interests is in technology and she asked him to have spirit that never stop to learn.
How is YouTube became very popular in a short time after its launch? The answer is in the idea of provide videos without spending any cost. The concept is simply, YouTube as a free video-sharing site where user can upload, watching, and organizing the video-clip. YouTube ranked as the most accessed video-sharing site. The video-clip that basicly programmed from Adobe Flash could take the form of movie trial, musical video-clip, or personal video made by users. With only relied on 67 employees, YouTube printed the extraordinary success. Time magazine nicknamed it as the Invention of the Year for 2006.
In YouTube, Hurley hold position as Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Chen as Chief Technology Officer (CTO), and Jawed as Advisor. In fact, the Internet video services has for a long time been presented by several news television site like Voice of America (VOA), CNN, BBC, MTV, or several world news network. But, the difference between YouTube and they is the station only presented their own program and not accepting videos from outsider. The YouTube visitor estimated reaching 20 million per month and according to a survey held by Nielsen/NetRatings, at least 100 million clips were watched every day and 65 thousand videos were uploaded to YouTube every 24 hours. This is what make Google interested and buy YouTube. So once more, please do not underestimate an idea and creativity.
