Written by imhaya on November 15th, 2007 in Historical.

SSEM ReplicaSmall-Scale Experimental Machine (SSEM) which is also recognized by name “baby” representing the first program depositor’s computer that can run the other programs. Launched in 21 juni 1948, this SSEM represent result of masterpiece Frederic C. Williams and Tom Kilburn from University of Manchester.

The Computer consisted of a number of tube, builded by William and Kilburn. Called “Williams Tube” that store 32 word which is each consisted of 32-bit. The tubes used as memory computer that owning ability to enable the computer to access the memory at random way, not alternately. This of course can quicken to access the required data.

Even so, the first computer still represent a serial machine doing one bit in one time. Input appliance is a number of switch to set bit on memory, while the output is bit pattern which emerge at Williams Tube (as cathode ray tube).

This SSEM represent a finite machine and more addressed just to test the tube Williams and other hardware, non as practical computer. This can seen from its ability which is can only store 32 number and also instruction, and its instruction also very finite. As for available instruction at SSEM is:

  1. Taking number and memory, vanishing of it from memory and loaded to gathering temporary place.
  2. Lessening a value from gathering.
  3. Writing number yielded from the gathering return to memory.
  4. Running other function depended by value that yielded by gathering.
  5. Quit.

SSEM non-stoped to be developed and continuation from this computer is Manchester Mark I and then developed again become SSEM Ferranti Mark I, representing second commercial multifunction computer in the world.

A replica from SSEM made in the 1998 to celebrate the 50 years anniversary. Nowadays the replica kept in Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester.
